Matsuno Chikanobu- Standing Courtesan

In this painting, the courtesan is wearing a kimono in two layers, with one sleeve of the over-kimono shrugged off and hanging down the display the pattern of the robe underneath. The outer kimono has a design of blue chrysanthemums that represents autumn that is contrasting with the red under kimono with its snowy winter bamboos that represents winter. The face has the sweetly smiling expression as is found in all works by Matsuno Chikanobu.

Katsushika Hokusai - The Great Wave

In this woodblock printing, ‘The Great Wave’ by Hokusai shows the ‘monstrous’ wave is about to crash three fishing boats. On the horizon, the Mount Fuji is so small that is insignificant near the big wave. By time, the painting of ‘The great wave’ became so famous that it ended up printed on objects such as pillows, mugs and among others.
