Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti

Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born in the 12th May of 1828 in London. He was the founder of the Pre-Raphaelites Brotherhood. 



Proserpine

‘Proserpine’ by Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti is a figure from the roman mythology. The story is about Proserpine, she was picking flowers from the valley of Enna when she was kidnapped by Pluto, the king of Hades and taken to the underworld. Proserpine’s mother begged for Proserpine release but it is granted on one condition that is not to eat any fruits of Hades. Unfortunately, Proserpine has already tasted a fruit and because of this she was allowed half of her time in the world of the living but the other half of her time must be spend in Hades with Pluto. Rossetti painted Proserpine standing there in despair, holding the fruit that cursed her life. Behind her there is light from the world above. ‘Proserpine’ is an oil painting on canvas.



John Everett Millais

John Everett Millais was born on the 8th June of 1829 and died on the 13th August of 1896 in London. He was the co-founder of the Pre-Raphaelites Brotherhood.

Ophelia


‘Ophelia’ by John Everett Millais was taken from the play of Shakespeare’s Hamlet where Ophelia was driven out of her mind when her father was killed by her lover Hamlet and she drowned herself in a stream. ‘Ophelia’ is an oil painting on canvas.
