Realism

Realism

Realism is a term which emerged in the second half of the nineteenth century. The artistic development of this genre (mainly associated with painting) grouped together those artists who tended to ignore to Baroque style, and focused on a more personal vision based on the observation of the contemporary world. Artists depicted ordinary life and focused on the social aspects of the middle and the lower classes. Realism appeared in France after the 1848 Revolution. The realists rejected academism and idealism in favour of naturalism.
